On February 23rd, students from all 7 French Immersion Elementary schools in the North Vancouver School District will be converging on Cineplex Cinemas Esplanade to take part in CPF North Vancouver’s annual French Film Festival! They will be viewing La guerre des tuques 3D a lively, animated remake of La guerre des tuques (The Dog Who Stopped the War), a beloved Québécois live-action film from 1984. A book of the same name was produced to accompany the original film. During Christmas holidays, the children of a small village in Québec split themselves into two groups and begin preparing a week-long snowball war. The rivalry opens up tension among group members, especially leaders Luc and Sophie. The colourful film of course is allegorical: Peace is tough and tedious; war is an easy solution.
Bon cinéma to Écoles Boundary, Braemar, Cleveland, Dorothy Lynas, Larson, Ross Road et Sherwood Park!

In 2015, École Braemar hosted its very own “French-style Winter Carnaval.” It was the first large-scale French event on the North Shore to include both French Immersion and English students.
For its third year running, the entire school (487 students) came together on Monday, February 6, 2017 to celebrate bilingualism, learn about French Canadian culture, the rich history of the Québec Winter “Carnaval,” and to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
On the days leading up to the event, students prepared by learning French songs and practicing French words broadcast over the school PA system each morning. Activities on the actual day of the “Carnaval” included themed crafts, French bingo, singing, ice sculpting by Ice Décor, and even a flash mob inspired by Rendez-vous de la Francophonie’s contest that demonstrated love and passion for the Canadian Francophonie!
Plus, for this year, the “Bonhomme” mascot, as well as Christ Atkinson – Assistant Superintendent, NVSD, Lucas King – VP, Mountainside Secondary, Cst. Anthony Cameron – Liaison Officer, RCMP, Deneka Michaud – Communications Manager, NVSD attended our event to help us celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
Merci à tous et à toutes!
This event also tied in with French Immersion Celebration Week 2017:

Each February, CPF BC & Yukon reimburses chapters up to $100 for appreciation activities hosted for its volunteers. This year, CPF North Vancouver used this thoughtful bursary to purchase delicious French pastries from the renowned Thierry Patisserie including macarons, madeleines & financiers. These tasty and beautiful creations, along with some non-alchoholic bubbly, were enjoyed by our deserving volunteer chapter reps who commit many hours of their own time organizing events in North Vancouver and sharing info about CPF and French-language learning. Bravo, CPF North Vancouver!
